In this fifth book of Bittner’s unforgettable Savage Destiny series Zeke and Abbie are forced to defend their children against challenges faced because of their mixed blood. More settlers come west under the Homestead Act, causing the gradual and final demise of the Cheyenne way of life. The surge of new settlers brings with it a wealthy Englishman, Edward Tynes, who builds a cattle ranch near the Monroe homestead and falls in love with Abbie, admiring her strength and bravery, and jealous of her undying love for a man who cannot give her the pampered life Tynes feels she deserves. Zeke leaves to join his warrior son, Wolf’s Blood, in new Indian wars, and for the first time Abbie’s loyalty to her husband is tested. But no man can replace the fiercely brave, strong, handsome Zeke Monroe in Abbie’s life. Climb the Highest Mountain is an action-packed, powerful love story you will never forget, the fifth in a series still in demand years after its first publication.

Climb the Highest Mountain Savage Destiny Book 5 edition by Rosanne Bittner Literature Fiction eBooks

This review is of “Climb the Highest Mountain”, book #5 in the “Savage Destiny” series by Rosanne Bittner.

The Story: The year is 1864. The Civil War is coming to an end, and more white migration west is going to soon affect Abigail Trent Monroe, her husband “Cheyenne” Zeke Monroe, and their seven children. The more immediate threat to the Monroes comes in the form of Englishman Sir Edwin Tynes, their new neighbor.

While that is going on,:

The Monroe children’s lives take major turns: Wolf’s Blood, the Monroe’s oldest son, is seriously injured at the massacre at Sand Creek, becomes embittered and joins his uncle, Swift Arrow, and the Sioux in fighting against white encroachment.

Daughter LeeAnn is kidnapped by Comanches and Zeke goes to rescue her.

Meanwhile, back in Colorado, eldest Monroe daughter Margaret becomes sexually involved with one of Tynes’ cowboys, who refuses to marry her. After this, Margaret tries to disavow her Indian heritage and becomes a prostitute. Margaret later marries a man, Morgan Brown, a mulatto, who buys into the Monroe ranch to help the family get back on their feet financially.

On an even sadder note, youngest daughter Lillian, whose health has always been fragile, passes away. These events drive a major wedge between Zeke and Abbie.

Zeke’s white half-brother, Dan, is back in the West and in the Army, but without his wife, Emily, and daughter, Jennifer, he’s starting to become attracted to Bonnie Beaker Lewis, whose husband was killed by Indians. Later, Emily dies, giving Dan and Bonnie an opening to act on their feelings. Dan and Bonnie later marry.

Zeke sleeps with Anna Gale, former prostitute now boarding house owner, while he is debating whether to leave Abbie and his family due to all they have endured. However, he and Abbie reconcile and they become a family again. For now…

Upside: I’m repeating myself, but Ms. Bittner is exceptional at digging deep into the soft underbelly of her characters emotions, both good and bad. It’s an emotional roller coaster, but Ms. Bittner’s fans-of which I am one-know it’s worth it.

Downside: Not much. I’d love to see the Monroes be happy, but I doubt that will happen.

Sex: Ms. Bittner’s love scenes are typically unimaginative.

Violence: One thing Ms. Bittner’s readers come to expect from her books is plenty of violence, and “Climb the Highest Mountain” certainly doesn’t disappoint in that regard. Assault, rape, shootings, killings, they’re all here.

Bottom Line: Frequent readers of Ms. Bittner’s books know what they’re getting from her work. Exceptional emotionalism, and rawness. It’s not always happy, but it’s great nonetheless.

Climb the Highest Mountain Savage Destiny Book 5 edition by Rosanne Bittner Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

As always with Bittner's Savage Destiny series my heart is captivated by the Monroe's. Also, as always, there is some repatriation, but overall this book is just as powerful as the others that have come before it. My heart breaks for Abbie in this book, and I was happy to see even more of Wolf's Blood as a man. You'll never regret reading the Savage Destiny series.
Love this story plus the sequels
This series is fantastic! I have had a hard time putting each book down when reading it. You get wrapped up in the character's feelings, struggles and love for each other. Bittner has a knack of making the characters come alive and getting the reader involved in the story. Be sure to read all of these stories in this series! You won't be disappointed!
As with the 4 previous books of the lives of Zeke and Abigail this 5th delivers as much as can be expected. Just downloaded the 6th book in the Savage Destiny series and I only hope there are more to follow. Bittn er keeps the entertainment coming and the reader lusting for more Zeke and Abbie. Love this series!
Starting to get tired of reading about everyone they know and love getting killed. I decided that I needed to take a break from the series for now. It was making me too depressed. BUT just because I'm taking a break and tired of reading about all the death in the books does not mean that it is a bad series. I've really enjoyed reading a lot of it. It just seems that there is too much death for them and the bad guys are getting all the luck.
Wonderful read....BUT the history of the last of the native American Indians demise in American I am ashamed to say I am a WHITE Person when reading this book (I would have been more ashamed if I would have contributed in those times to the demise of those proud "The real AMERICAN'S. the American native Indians".)

I am reading the 7th book of the Savage Destiny Series now and will be sad to finish this fascinating series. My family had some contact with native American's as my father was friends with the Yakama's and was even invited to a root festival which few white
men witness. When I was a young child and lived in western Washington State the native American's would walk right into our kitchen to see my dad and have coffee. I remember their long black hair with their hats and plaid shirts.
I have read the whole SAVAGE DESTINY SERIES. I love Roseanne Bittner's books! Someone said there was too much violence in this series. If you have studied the old west in the Mid-1800 hundred's, It was just as Rosanne said. The white man killed villages of Indian wome and, children. They slaughtered them by the hundreds. The Indians lived off of the land. They lived off of the buffalo for almost their every need. The white man wanted their land. So they killed the buffalo by the thousands to near distinction so the Indians would starve. They took these proud people and put them on reservations. They killed their spirit. So yes the books had violence that really happened. I cried in the book where Zeke was killed. I cried when Abbie girl died and went to heaven to be with her love of her whole life Zeke. This book and all of the books in the series "Savage Destiny " were amazing. Kudos to Rosanne Bittner again.
